Props to Madonna for trying something like this at this stage of her career, and of course, she is an icon. However, I feel like a lot of the praise surrounding this album comes from the fact that it’s Madonna. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not bad, but I didn’t find it particularly memorable. Even the standouts, like “Bring Your Love,” fall behind some of Madonna’s other work, as well as Sabrina’s. I mostly enjoyed the collaborations, which helped elevate each track. Overall, the album seems very well crafted. Ariana’s voice is one of the strongest and most impactful of her generation, so any project she embarks on is interesting to some degree. The rollout for this project has been crazy good. Capitol Records really trusts Adelá and they definitely should. This is one of my favorite albums of the year. I understand why it got criticized for being too “predictable” but I think it has a very clear identity and I do think it offers something new, especially through the production, which is really great.
