I love when an album makes me understand and appreciate an artist on a deeper level, and this record does exactly that. Lil Nas X proves himself to be not only a hitmaker, but also a great rapper and singer with genuine depth as an artist. I especially appreciate the moments where he opens up about his feelings and pain. Lil Nas X explores his identity and his journey toward self-acceptance. The album’s aesthetic and cover are a nod to this: a man freeing himself from his chains, hence why he is nude in a fantastical world without order, prejudice, or rules. He can simply be himself. The album moves from hits that will have you bopping your head to more introspective songs that allow you to understand him better and reflect on your own experiences. It’s perfect in the sense that he communicates his vision and himself so clearly. Not all of the songs are 10/10 or extremely memorable, but they all serve their purpose and contribute to the story while remaining consistent and enjoyable. There is a small stretch where the album loses a bit of its momentum. That said, every track still remains enjoyable and has replay value, which is incredibly important and, in my opinion rare. An underrated album by genre-bending artist Lil Nas X. It’s a very creative, unique, and special project.
