At five, Olivia Rodrigo wrote a song about waiting for the bells on Santa's sleigh. At 23 the wish is a ride to her boyfriend's parents' house, and the chorus keeps asking until it stops sounding like a request. She sells it by playing it straight, listing how good she has been and then asking for real commitment as if it belongs on a Christmas list. Dan Nigro and Amy Allen keep it under three minutes. The best moment comes late, when she points out that his exes only ever got the summer. It's a petty thing to put in a holiday song, and it's the bit I'll be singing in December.
