The LA Times called these songs dreary and said they lacked urgency, and on a straight listen that isn't crazy. I Love You. moves at one speed, slow and smoky, and a few tracks in the middle blur into the same grey haze. But the haze is the whole trick. Afraid sounds like a hangover you chose, Alleyways takes that one-note xx guitar and makes it lonelier, and Sweater Weather is still the best thing they ever did, a song so sure of itself it never needed to hurry. Thirteen years later it's knocking on five billion streams. Three songs too long, and the lyrics are very nineteen. Still a debut with a real look and a real sound.
