Bonito Generation cover

Jackson Futrell’s review of the albumBonito Generation

Kero Kero Bonito · 2016

I feel like this album was surprising breath of fresh air. It wasn’t very deep or exploring of many emotions, but I don’t think it has to. Honestly, it was kind of like eating a piece of candy. You wouldn’t wanna eat it all the time and it doesn’t necessarily teach you anything new to you or is amazing for your body but in the moment, it’s kind of sweet and a nice break from the more monotonous meaty flavors that you eat throughout the day where there’s much more to digest and analyze. In the world where music is really, really negative sometimes and a lot of music explores a range of emotions, which are important to explore, it’s nice to have an album that’s just positive to be positive. Honestly, it kind of edges on the line of naïve sometimes. I really liked also how she kept switching between English and Japanese. I think that made it really unique and a little more fun. This album is fun, a little, silly, and positive. It’s not something I would want to listen to all the time but it’s nice to have a break from the brooding, dark, angry, sad, and so on music that I usually listen to. It really reminded me of Yo Gabba Gabba especially in a lot of her delivery. I can’t say I was the biggest fan of her lyrics or how she delivered everything, often it sounded like TV show for kids, but it kind of works. Favorite song? Graduation
