everyone warns you about the drum sound before you even get near this one and they're not wrong, hanhart put so much reverb on that kit it sounds like it was tracked in an airport. weirdly i don't hate it. front half is cruising music though, rockin' again and call of the wild go past without leaving a mark on me, and then everybody up and give it everything you've got finally show up with some urgency. the keyboards are doing a lot of lifting for a band that never needed them. 3.5, maybe a 4 on a night when the gloss reads as charm instead of nerves.

Side two is where it stops being background for me, Broken Heroes has the only riff on the record that sounds like it cost them anything. And that drum sound is genuinely less offensive on my '85 copy than on any CD of it, the reverb sits behind the guitars on wax instead of on top of them.

kit sounds better than the songs bolted to it, that reverb tail is doing more work on the front half than anybody in the band
