Spike Island cover

aminal’s review of the songSpike Island

Pulp · More

first new pulp song in twelve years and the first thing out of his mouth is an explanation. from most people that would be unbearable, but jarvis has always written to be said aloud rather than sung, and "shouting and pointing" scans better than whatever noble thing he could have reached for. the guitar does its stone roses bit and doesn't pretend otherwise. james ford keeps it dry enough that the disco bassline reads as a strut instead of a costume. i was braced for the version of this made with better gear and worse reasons. it isn't that one.
