TESTING does what the title promises: Rocky trades hit-chasing for texture experiments — Moby samples, distorted gospel, FKA twigs — and accepts the commercial cost. "A$AP Forever" and "Fukk Sleep" justify the lab time; stretches of the rest stay theoretical. A fashionable risk that earned more respect than replay.

About
TESTING is the third studio album by American rapper A$AP Rocky, released on May 25, 2018 via RCA. The album includes guest appearances from FKA twigs, Skepta, Kodak Black, Playboi Carti, French Montana, Dev Hynes, Frank Ocean, Lauryn Hill, among others. It was produced primarily by Hector Delgado and A$AP Rocky himself, alongside a variety of high-profile record producers. TESTING was supported by two singles: “A$AP Forever“ and “Praise the Lord (Da Shine)“, alongside numerous promotional singles. The album received generally positive reviews from critics and debuted at number four on the US Billboard 200, earning 75,000 album-equivalent units of which 13,000 were pure sales, becoming A$AP Rocky's third consecutive top-five album on the chart. On October 16, 2019, TESTING was certified gold by the RIAA for combined sales and album-equivalent units of over 500,000 units in the United States.

In September 2017, A$AP Rocky announced the release of a new album, originally scheduled for a late 2017 release. The previous month, A$AP Rocky released Cozy Tapes Vol. 2: Too Cozy as part of the rap collective A$AP Mob. In January 2018, the album's title was cryptically left under SoundCloud song descriptions, until being officially confirmed in May 2018. In an interview with GQ, Rocky stated: "My new album is really about testing new sounds. People are scared to test new sounds, so they go with what's current 'cause it's the easy thing to do. The top 100 songs sound a certain way. People cater more to that because it's a bigger demographic behind that, or it's a guaranteed demographic behind that. I prefer to experiment and have my crowd grow with me and to reach new crowds. I don't just rap—I actually make music. That's why it takes time. These sonics represent me." The album artwork was unveiled on May 21, 2018, featuring a photo by Houston-based creative director Cary Fagan. The tracklist was announced three days later.
