Black Wind, Fire and Steel: The Atlantic Albums 1987-1992Manowar5.0

Yes, the loincloths. Everyone gets as far as the loincloths and stops there. It's 1992, grunge has eaten the charts, and Manowar open Triumph of Steel with a 28-minute song about Achilles in eight parts. Name me a braver bad career move in metal. Kings of Metal has the better songs, sure, but Triumph is where they quit caring what anyone thought of them. The 2020 remasters are louder and nobody wrecked the bass, which with Joey DeMaio in the band would have been a crime. When did you last actually sit through Achilles start to finish?

Heroes of The Great WarSabaton3.5

The Metal Archives crowd calls this a cash grab, and on paper they're right: one new song, six lifted from The Great War and The War to End All Wars. I still play it more than either of those. Seven tracks, all the WWI material, under 25 minutes, no ballad to wait out. The First Soldier is the Albert Roche one and yes, it's mid-tempo keyboard cheese. Joakim sells cheese better than anybody in power metal. Lady of the Dark hits harder here than it did on the album.
