The drums on this sound like they were miked from two rooms over, and his voice sits so close and so soft that nothing else on the record ever has to compete with it. Queen of California opens well enough, then it finds a mid-tempo shuffle and stays there. Blunderbuss came out the same spring with a band actually trying to break something. I gave this three goes because people I trust swear by it, and the third time I was asleep before Walt Grace. Two stars: one for Queen of California, one for the nap.
