Sounds like he had a clear vision of what to do and nailed it in a very concise way - from the gorgeous masked troubadour aesthetic, his trembling and deep voice to the style of sedated country he delivers, it's all very coherent and works perfectly with what it's trying to achieve. The songs are slow and mostly ecstatic, with his dark voice wiring the country tunes with a fair dose of haunting and mystery, but beneath the surface there's plenty of elements running and wiring the record - dreamy gliding guitars, a gothic atmosphere giving the album more cinematic soundscapes, a slight reverb that gives it an abstract tone, the solitary tone... there's a lot going on here and yet it's strinkingly simple on its ambition and delivery, the country present here is passed through a more alternative/indie filter, given the guitars in tracks like "Winds Change", but his voice is what sells this as an authentic effort that comes from a genuine love for the genre, it's filled with enunciations and a delivery that is a pure homage to the genre and tentative to find your own tune and the songs incorporate the more alternative elements in a natural and convincing way, like the breakdown at "Kansas" outro or the more gothic affectations on "Buffalo Run" - it never uses country nor alternative music as a gimmick, but rather a clash of generations and tastes that worked out coherently, that could only be made by a new soul truly in love with music and that's what sets Orville leagues above right off his debut.

About
Pony is the debut studio album by Canadian country musician Orville Peck, released on March 22, 2019 by Sub Pop. A country, alternative country, and cowboy pop album, Pony features elements of goth, dream pop, shoegazing, indie rock, surf rock, post-punk, gospel folk. Pony was named to the initial longlist for the 2019 Polaris Music Prize in June 2019. The album also received a Juno Award nomination for Alternative Album of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2020.
