Lafourcade diving even deeper into mexican music, if "Musas" was an ode to her latin idols, this is a homage to specifically mexican music - doubling down on regional genres like Ranchera and Mariachi, Lafourcade treats these songs with care, passion and exquisite musicianship, showing a clear vision of what she wanted to do and the goal she wanted to achieve here, constructing a kaleidoscope of mexican heritage. It's more of a project than a album on the standard meaning of the word, with a few covers and many re-recordings from previous albums' songs, she puts a delightful flavour in every one of these - soaring with her characteristic and distinct voice, which sounds sweet and glowing while still stinging deep on its emotional skills, flowing like a force of nature throughout the string-heavy songs and intense colorful arrangements, and while the originals "Una vida" and "Mi Religión" are the stand-outs, the re-recordings of songs like the already wonderful "Hasta La Raíz" and her third version of the classic "Un derecho de nacimiento" are easily also among the best here, with the new covers of "Curucucu paloma" reaching new heights on how emotional and chill-inducing her voice can be. "Un canto por México" delineates even more Lafourcade's vision of her music, allowing the immersion on her cultlre, no more simply paying homage to them, but putting herself amidst the genres' canon with exquisite songwriting, a distinctive voice and pure vision.
