  The album is not for me, but I can see its value. Although the songs are relevant, well-written, and important within their context, I find “I Don’t Wanna Be a Soldier Mama” and “Gimme Some Truth” musically boring and too long, and I think they kill the pace of the album a bit. That being said, they are very impactful. Lennon wrote about what he cared about on this record, showing that he cared about the world in the two tracks mentioned previously and,of course, in “Imagine.” He also shows his love and fascination with Yoko, especially in “Oh My Love,” a really good love song and his anger and resentment toward Paul McCartney in “How Do You Sleep?” The record isn’t full of bangers, no, but it is really genuine and important. People downplay Yoko Ono for “separating” the Beatles, but you gotta give her credit for the fact that John was clearly in love with her, as seen on this album, and that it led to him showing his potential as a writer and as a solo artist on this record. Additionally, and not to take a side, Yoko also produced a really big part of the album helping John create it. The album is solid, and even though I must admit I didn’t enjoy parts of it, it still shows Lennon’s brilliance, especially in “Imagine,” which is one of the best songs of all time, and in the tracks that follow it like “Crippled Inside” and “Jealous Guy”which are classics in their own right. I give it a 4.5 because it’s not perfect in my opinion, but a 5 is definitely justifiable, as it’s a perfect example of what albums should be: a space for an artist to fully express and develop their ideas and vision. I just wish it had more of a replayability factor, because aside from being a “masterpiece,” I wouldn’t necessarily listen to all of these songs again, or at least not without the right context. The two songs I mentioned before don’t truly connect with me, not because I don’t care about what they’re talking about but because they don’t resonate with me musically. Some of the last songs on the album didn’t quite do it for me either, like “Oh Yoko!” Sure, it’s fun, but I don’t see myself singing it in the back of my head. Maybe my problem with it is the very similar production in most of the songs. While it fits the album’s overall vision, I think it can make some of the tracks blend together after a while.
