I’m not sure how to feel about this one yet. I feel like it maybe stepping farther away from the weird darkness in WWAFAWDWG, and leaning harder into lovesick pop. I don’t dislike it, I definitely enjoy the balance of the love songs with the weirder stuff like “THE DINER”. But I think as of right now I wish it went deeper.

The third-album flex: HIT ME HARD AND SOFT refuses singles culture entirely — ten songs, many with mid-track metamorphoses, built for front-to-back listening. "BIRDS OF A FEATHER" became the devotion anthem of its year, and "L'AMOUR DE MA VIE"'s synth-pop pivot rewards the patience. Eilish and Finneas, confident enough to take their time.
