freddie at this stage in his career wasn't chasing anybody and it shows. the voice is still that warm buttery thing, all ache in the grain, and he just lets it carry the whole record. yeah a couple of the ballads run together by the back half. doesn't really matter. put it on late with the lights low and it does the one thing he's always done better than anyone.

the back-half blur is kind of the point though. late-night record all the way, immaculate to drift off to.

the back half doesn't blur because those ballads are weak, it's that they're all sitting on the same arrangement, same tempo, same pad underneath. a voice like that deserved somebody willing to change the drums once.
