Huey Lewis and the News · 1986

Patrick Bateman calls this their most accomplished album, and annoyingly, he's not totally wrong. "Stuck with You" and "Hip to Be Square" are about as clean and tight as 1986 pop rock got, and the first one went all the way to No. 1. The horns are sharp and Huey's voice does the regular-guy thing better than anyone else on the radio at the time. The problem is that the whole record wants to be liked by everyone, and you can hear it. Nothing here takes a risk. "Hip to Be Square" sounds like a joke about squares that is also sincerely square, which might be why it suits Bateman so well. Great singles, safe album.
