Those horns at the top are a lot. First time through I nearly skipped to Woman. Second time I let it play, and the orchestra swells up behind her and then drops right out, and the beat flips under her twice without her missing a step. That part is great. The words stay big and general for me, the state of the world, the state of the country, not much Simz in it yet. Mostly she's announcing.

Put this on last November as a joke and it hasn't left. buy me presents has a sax solo right before the final chorus that sounds like a person stood up in a room and played it, which I don't get much from pop records made in 2023, and I rewound it twice. cindy lou who is where it got me. The beat drops out, it's piano and a little synth and her voice going quiet over a Grinch reference, and it's done in about two minutes when I wanted four. white xmas is her showing off and I don't mind that either. The joke's on me now.

I get what this is for. It's a summer song, built to be shouted back at a festival, and I'm sure it was somebody's whole summer. It doesn't ask anything of me though. The drums are locked to the grid and the hook comes round on schedule. There's an anti-flash idea in the lyrics that gets stated once and then left there. Guy2Bezbar has more life in his one verse than KeBlack has across the track, and when the guest is the reason I'd press play on somebody else's single I can't go higher. Fine for a summer. I wasn't listening for one.

One of the two on Stardust without a feature, so it's the one that has to carry itself. Around the two minute mark the drums double up and he sits a step behind them for a bar, which I think is on purpose and I'm still not sure it lands. Everything here is grid. Nothing gets played, that's the record's whole idea, and I keep wanting one drummer to put a fill in the wrong place. The rasp is doing most of the work. Grid.
