Sandra St. Victor wrote it, not him, and you can hear that in the singing. He sounds like he's having a good afternoon at the session and nothing more urgent than that. Everyone says slight and over too fast. Fair, except slight from him in this stretch is still a groove most people would build a whole record around. Kit has give in it too (1995, people in a room, nobody quantizing anything). If this is the taster for the vault comp they could have led with something meatier. Had it on twice this week anyway.

The drums are the first problem, there's no pocket at all, just a polite shuffle keeping time behind everybody. You've got Alex Malheiros in the room and nothing built for him to sit under. Einhorn's harmonica is genuinely beautiful and the man is 93, and I understand why it's there, Hyldon got a harmonica when he was four and never let go of it, that's a lovely thing to know. Knowing it doesn't make the song work. He's calling this blues sertanejo and what it mostly sounds like is a warm anecdote about finding sandwich counters in Rio after coming up from Bahia, better told than sung. I'd put

Drums first with Sango, always. Twenty tracks that don't even hit fifty minutes, so nothing gets to sit around and admire itself. The Rio stretch is what I keep going back to, Sol No RJ especially, that baile bounce he's been chasing since the Da Rocinha tapes except now it's sitting inside a rap record instead of next to one. St. Claude gets New Orleans right without wearing it as a costume. G.O. is thin, that's the one I skip. But the guests actually rap to what's under them here, nobody's treating the beat like furniture, and on a record with two dozen features that's the whole ballgame. Th

23 tracks, about 8 too many, and the slurring is real, half of it you have to lean in for. beat selection is what carries the hour though, that soul-sample run in the middle is gorgeous. eliza is the best song he's written since been one. kount ya hat with veeze is the one i keep pulling back up.
