Sorceress

Opeth · 2016

3.5

the prog-rock pivot loses people but that title track riff is filthy and the quiet bits earn their keep. not Blackwater Park, doesn't try to be.

agree the quiet parts earning their keep is the whole thing, that clean-to-heavy swing is what most heavy bands fumble completely. sorceress never grabbed me like the older stuff but you're selling it, anyway.

That title track riff is the reason I own this one. Side B loses me though, the quiet stretches go on a lot longer than they earn and I'd rather just put Damnation on.

The quiet bits are the whole record for me, Will O the Wisp especially. That title track riff sounds better on paper than it does in the mix though, it's buried under a fake-warm master and headphones only make that more obvious.
