Khruangbin is a trio from Houston, Texas, consisting of Laura Lee Ochoa (bass and vocals), Mark Speer (guitar and vocals), and Donald “DJ” Johnson Jr. (drums, keys, and vocals). Their band name means “airplane” in Thai—a fitting image for their music, which drifts freely across continents and genres. Khruangbin’s sound is unmistakable: airy guitars floating over deep, pulsing basslines and calm, hypnotic drums. Their music often feels like the soundtrack to warm nights and long journeys, with clear traces of 1960s Thai funk, surf rock, dub, soul, and psychedelic atmospheres. Most of their songs are instrumental, but occasional vocals appear as another subtle layer in their dreamy universe. In 2024, they released their fourth studio album, A La Sala, a collection of warm and intimate grooves that captures the band at the core of its expression—minimalist, spacious, and filled with the feeling of being caught in a moment. Khruangbin’s music is both relaxing and danceable, with a rare ability to transport the listener—like a calm journey around the world, guided by guitar, bass, and drums.
