the shoegaze record everyone swore they'd hate. george actually singing instead of shrieking, and it works. Mombasa's payoff earns the whole runtime.

Mombasa earning the runtime is fair. I'd stop short of shoegaze as the label though, not enough patience in the mix for that comparison; Neptune Raining Diamonds four minutes in does more of the real quiet-to-heavy work than the closer gets credit for.

The payoff on Mombasa lands, I'll give you that, but it's the last couple of minutes of a very long song and the rest is waiting. I grade slow records soft and I still reached for Sunbather after.
