Sounds like a hotel ballroom after the wedding has left, carpet swallowing everything, somebody still at the piano. The decision that matters is how close Arif Mardin sits her voice. On Miss Otis Regrets and Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most that closeness keeps the old songs small and a little cruel, which suits them. On From a Distance and The Gift of Love the same closeness starts to plead, and the second half turns into one long ballad. Nowhere near Sundfør, but closer than a double-platinum Midler record had any reason to be. The ballads wanted to be hymns.

From a Distance is one I can't do at all (my mum played the cassette single until it went wobbly). Never got as far as Miss Otis Regrets, so that's tonight sorted.
