Shinoda's mixing desk is the real artist here, which is why it isn't the cash-in it should have been. They re-recorded the rap vocals over the new beats instead of beat-matching two finished songs, and you can hear it on Dirt Off Your Shoulder / Lying From You, where nothing is getting dragged into a tempo it doesn't want. The part I still go back to is the last track, when the One Step Closer bridge comes up under 99 Problems and it briefly stops being a novelty. Numb/Encore took the Grammy and is the least interesting thing on it. Four days at the Roxy for an MTV segment and most of it holds

Eighteen tracks deep on a twenty-one track record and that's the one I keep going back to. She's normally doing the sweet version of something she used to do bleeding, and here the certainty stops sounding like a pose. When you know you know, said flat, no run-up in front of it. It's the beat tape thing where the best two bars turn up after you've stopped paying attention, which is very Dilla. Not defending the other twenty.
