An album critics rave about but few people actually listen to. A band so mismanaged their music may forever be out of print. A visionary frontman who famously took an axe to his bandmate’s hotel room door. Now that I have your attention, let me say: this album truly lives up to the hype. The band emerged fully formed, with every member able to sing, write, and play. Think Jefferson Airplane mixed with the Grateful Dead, except everyone knows what they’re doing and the jams have actual meaning. If you can track down a copy, it’s a must listen. A true gem for fans of baroque pop, this album infuses the genre with a distinctly American flavor and offers a clear glimpse into the future careers of each band member. While Neil Young’s career would peak in the ‘70s, his budding work is firmly supported by Jack Nitzsche’s thoughtful production (“Expecting to Fly” and “Broken Arrow”). Definitely a '70s era jazz album in production/arrangement. However, the overwhelming talent of the ensemble negates any personal production peeves. The only thing I wish Hall didn't do was decide to dedicate 19 mins for the "Concierto de Aranjuez." I think it kills the otherwise wonderful buzz from the interplay of Baker and Desmond. However, this is definitely Hall's best contemporary record and he's wonderfully complimented by Paul Desmond and Chet Baker. Great stuff.

An exhilarating listening experience. Especially if you're looking for good jazz records from the '70s. Hubbard along with Ron Carter and Herbie Hancock, are positively on fire as they navigate a dynamic set of fresh material, keeping everything engaging and never repetitive. If you have a good set of cans that can handle Hi-Res, they'd be put to good use here.

Carlos' very best version of the Santana Band. Here, the very large ensemble is captured pristinely in Japan - and they kill it. Taking a cue from Mahavishnu Orchestra and Weather Report, the band embarks on a jazzier direction away from Santana's latin rock beginnings. Going H.A.M on classics while debuting some new honest-to-god jazz fusion (and it's surprisingly good!). Underrated and easily the best band effort by the group. Every member's strengths are on display with "This Whole World, "Forever," and even Bruce Johnston's contributions are above average. Also, dig the dreamy synth-laden mini masterpiece of Brian's "All I Wanna Do." If that's not the origin of chill wave then I have no idea what is. All kudos aside, the best tracks seem to strangely feature a "B" followed by "Wilson." Go figure.
