More about KNEECAP

About

KNEECAP are a Belfast-based hip-hop trio—Mo Chara (Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh), Móglaí Bap (Naoise Ó Cairealláin), and DJ Próvaí (JJ Ó Dochartaigh)—who rap fluidly in both Irish and English, blending streetwise wit with political punchy lyrics rooted in working-class Belfast culture. They are central figures in the revival of Irish‑language youth culture and political rap. They debuted in 2017 with the single C.E.A.R.T.A., followed by their debut album 3CAG (2018), which introduced their satirical, defiant voice. Their second album Fine Art arrived in June 2024, featuring collaborations with artists like Fontaines D.C. and Grian Chatten. It debuted at number two on the Irish charts and earned praise for its blend of dancehall, rave, and political commentary. Their biopic, Kneecap (directed by Rich Peppiatt), premiered at Sundance 2024—the first film in Irish ever shown there—and won the NEXT Audience Award. It later collected multiple awards at festivals like Galway Film Fleadh and BAFTA recognition; Ireland submitted it for the 2025 Oscars.

KNEECAP are as notorious for their provocations as their music. Their Coachella 2025 set included pro‑Palestinian messages and chants, leading to visa revocations, festival cancellations, and even legal charges against Mo Chara. Despite intense political backlash—including calls to ban them from Glastonbury—they have continued to perform defiantly, often leading crowds in chants like “Free Palestine” during explosive sets. Musically, KNEECAP sounds like rave-fueled resistance: rapid drill beats, punk-infused energy, dancehall grooves, and hard-hitting lyricism delivered with uncanny charm and dark humor. They push boundaries, shifting from ironic satire to earnest political soliloquy—channeling frustration, identity pride, and revolutionary spirit into tracks that feel like street performance poetry.
