Perren got brought in to sell records and Stay in Love sounds exactly like that decision. Disco polish on every corner, and most of these songs just sit there being nice. Stick Together is the one that moves, six minutes with Stevie on it, and it's the only stretch where the record forgets it's supposed to be product. Rudolph knew what to build around that voice. This is careful instead. Still Minnie Riperton though, which buys a lot.
