The Joshua Tree

U2 · 1987

4.5

U2's America album: Eno and Lanois stretch the band's anthems into desert-wide ambience, and Bono finds characters — miners, immigrants, addicts — to carry the awe and disillusionment. The opening three songs may be the strongest side one of the 1980s. Earnestness this total shouldn't work; here it does.
