Master of Puppets

Metallica · 1986

5.0

Thrash's high-water mark: Master of Puppets weaponizes precision — the title track's gallop, "Orion"'s bass cathedral, Burton's final testament — into metal that earned orchestral comparisons without asking for them. "Battery" still opens shows four decades later. The genre has gotten faster and heavier since; it has never gotten better.
