Jackson's new jack swing pivot, with Teddy Riley's mechanical funk replacing Quincy Jones' silk: "Remember the Time" and "In the Closet" groove harder than anything on Bad, while "Black or White" and "Heal the World" chase a global audience he already owned. Overlong and occasionally preachy, but the rhythmic invention is real.
