More about The Funeral Portrait
About
The Funeral Portrait is an American rock band from Atlanta, Georgia, founded in 2014 by vocalist Lee Jennings. The band originally started under the name Cosmoscope, but took their new name from an Opeth song on the album Blackwater Park (2001) — a choice that says a great deal about where they draw their inspiration. Following the EP For the Dearly Departed (2014) and debut album A Moment of Silence (2016) on Revival Recordings, the band spent years touring relentlessly as a support act for artists such as Shinedown, Underoath, Skillet and Ice Nine Kills. The major breakthrough came with their second album, Greetings from Suffocate City (2024) on Better Noise Music, where the single "Suffocate City" featuring Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills reached number one on the Active Rock chart — the band's first ever radio chart placement. The album features guest appearances from Bert McCracken (The Used) and Danny Worsnop (Asking Alexandria), and in 2024 the band opened for Five Finger Death Punch and Marilyn Manson on their North American summer tour. Pandora named them one of ten "Artists to Watch" for 2025.

The current lineup is Jennings (vocals), Cody Weissinger (guitar), Gareth Calk (guitar), Robert Weston (bass) and Homer Umbanhower (drums). Musically, The Funeral Portrait blends post-hardcore, emo, pop-punk and musical theatre into something Jennings himself has compared to a cross between My Chemical Romance, Ghost and Motionless In White. Alternative Press early on called them "the inspiring antidote to stagnant metalcore." Their lyrics revolve around mental health, addiction, love and anger — delivered with a vulnerability that never pretends to be ironic. The band is openly supportive of the LGBTQ+ community, and during concerts band members share a kiss on stage as a regular part of the show — a ritual that has led to them being removed from at least one tour because the headline act refused to approve it. Jennings has commented that people who take issue with it "just make us want to kiss even harder." Live, The Funeral Portrait is an experience they call "Devotion Ceremonies" — darkly theatrical shows featuring specially designed stage installations, costumes and characters called "The Icons." Their fanbase, known as "The Coffin Crew," is a tight-knit community in the tradition of AFI's Despair Faction and the MCRmy. In January 2026, the band released their first live album, Live From Suffocate City, recorded during their sold-out hometown concert at The Masquerade in Atlanta. The band has also collaborated with publisher Z2 on a comic book based on the album's universe. This is a band building a world, not just playing concerts — and the invitation to join is open to everyone.
