Illuminate is Shawn Mendes consolidating fast: John Mayer-school guitar pop with a bigger budget and a sharper falsetto, anchored by "Treat You Better" and "Mercy"'s respectable melodrama. It's craftsmanlike, sincere and slightly anonymous — the sound of an arena career being responsibly assembled.
